Police in Cornwall on criminal damage against speed cameras

The comments come after an incident that took place last night in Helston where an average-speed camera was cut down on the Helston side of Trewennack. Similar incidents where cameras were cut down also took place at the Norway Inn in Perranarworthal and on the stretch of the A39 on the Penryn side of the village at the start of October. Police say their investigations are ongoing and that their concerns stem from the fact that these incidents endanger the public, divert resources from critical police activity, and disrupts road users and the local community.

The damaged speed camera (Image: Emma Ferguson) A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were called at 00.45am on Friday 10 November to a report that an average speed camera in Helston had been cut down. Enquiries remain ongoing in relation to this matter.”

Superintendent for local policing, Ian Thompson said: “We’re deeply concerned about the recent surge in criminal damage to average speed cameras in the West Cornwall area. These acts not only endangers the public, but also diverts resources from critical police activity, it disrupts the local community and road users, and places a burden on the taxpayers for the repair costs. “Our investigations continue and we urge the community to report any suspicious activity or share information that might aid our enquiries.
