Police watchdog investigates crash that closed major road

An independent investigation will be carried out into a crash involving a police van and a car. Liverpool Road in Huyton[1] was closed westbound between Longview Lane and Blue Bell Lane following the crash on Sunday, November 19. A marked police van was responding to an emergency when it was involved in a crash with a blue Renault Kadjar just before 7.35am.

Photos taken at the scene showed a cordon in place at the junction of Liverpool Road and Blue Bell Lane, near to the Bluebell Lane Medical Practice. The driver of the Renault, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital by the North West Ambulance Service for treatment where his condition was described as stable. The police[2] officers in the vehicle were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

In an update today (Tuesday) Merseyside Police said the man has now been discharged from hospital and the incident has been referred to the The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). An investigation into the crash is ongoing and Merseyside Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash, or who has dashcam footage of the crash, to come forward. Anyone with information can contact Merseyside Police on Twitter[5] @MerPolCC or on Facebook[6] ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ quoting reference 23001159101.
