Collision has involved two trucks and a car
National Higways says the crash has involved two trucks and a car. As it stands both the northbound and southbound carriageways remain shut. The northbound closure is expected to be in place 'for several hours' while the southbound side is blocked to allow the air ambulance to attend the scene.
A spokesperson said: "The M6 in Greater Manchester is closed northbound between J22 (Winwick) & J23 (Haydock Island) due to a serious road traffic collision involving 2 Heavy Goods Vehicles and a car. "North West Motorway Police Group, emergency services and Air Ambulance are in attendance and are being assisted by National Highways Traffic Officers. "The southbound carriageway is blocked while the Air Ambulance attends.
"Traffic within the northbound closure is being turned around from the rear.
Motorists are advised to wait until instructed to turn.
"The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours for collision investigation, recovery and clear-up work."
