Stolen in CNY: A bright purple food truck with thieves ‘joyriding’ down the highway

This stolen vehicle should be easy to spot: It’s a bright purple trailer, marked with images of waffles, and pulled by a tan truck.

The food truck belongs to Funk ‘n Waffles[1], the Syracuse restaurant / bar/ music venue in Armory Square.

It was apparently stolen sometime Thursday night or Friday morning from a storage facility in Salina, owner Adam Gold said. Funk ‘n Waffles posted an alert[2] about the missing truck shortly after 3 p.m. today on Facebook and Instagram.

“MISSING: Our food trailer and truck were taken this morning from storage. We are saddened by the loss and are hoping that someone has seen it.

Last seen in Lafayette area. The truck is a tan 2004 Chevy Express Van with NY plates: FNKWFFLS. The trailer is purple as seen above with plates CD63563.

“If anyone has seen them please call the police so we might be able to get them back.”

Gold told syracuse.com he’s since learned that the truck was seen at a gas station in Truxton, in Cortland County, about 7:30 a.m. and may have then turned onto Route 13 near Cortland.

There’s also video footage showing that the thieves may have switched the vehicles towing the trailer.

“This is just crazy man,” Gold said. “I’m getting calls every minute about this. It seems like these guys are high and joyriding with our food trailer.”

Gold said the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft. Syracuse.com has reached out to the sheriff’s office for more information but hasn’t had a response.

Gold purchased the truck and trailer last year, and has been using it at events.

He had just cleaned it and was preparing to put it in winter storage.

The truck and trailer were stored last night in a facility on Seventh North Street in Salina, along with other local food trucks, Gold said. The Funk ‘n Waffles truck seems to be the only one that was taken.

He estimated the replacement value of the truck and trailer at between £80,000 and £100,000. He had outfitted the trailer with fryers, cooktops and other features to prepare the items on his menu.

Gold opened the first Funk ‘n Waffles location in 2007 just off Marshall Street near Syracuse University, then opened a second location at 307-13 S.

Clinton St. in Armory Square in 2014.

The SU location closed in 2017.

The menu features variations on waffles, chicken and waffles, fries and other comfort foods.

Gold is also a member of the band Sophistafunk[3].
