Stretton drunken crash driver jailed after her aunt was fatally injured

A drunk driver who caused the death of her aunt in a crash has been jailed. Keavi Illsley drove her Vauxhall Corsa into a tree after coming off the road in Staffordshire in the early hours. At Stafford Crown Court, Illsley pleaded guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention while unfit through drink.

Her aunt, Katie Westwood, was fatally injured in the crash in Stretton, on 8 October 2022, after the two of them had left a pub, the court heard. Illsley, from Burton upon Trent, was sentenced to four years and eight months behind bars and banned from driving for seven years and four months, by a judge during a hearing on 14 November. The defendant, whose sentences will run concurrently, had managed to get Ms Westwood out of the car after the crash, in Bitham Lane, but her aunt was later found dead nearby.

Det Ch Insp Al Lyford offered condolences to Ms Westwood’s family and said the case showed the devastating consequences drinking and driving can have.
