The Gloucestershire stories you may have missed in the past seven days

The end of another week, where early November marks Remembrance Day to remember and respect the fallen through conflict. Across Gloucestershire[1], numerous Armistice Day celebrations will be taking place, and in Cinderford[2] the occasion will mark 100 years since the town's war memorial was put in its rightful place. November days so far have been wet, cold and of course the dark still comes earlier.

At Gloucestershire Live[3], we're keeping a close eye on any potential flood developments[4] and as always every week there are seven stories you may have missed. Seven stories are below and if you have a story do email Gloucestershire Live via [email protected][5] and for as much community news from Gloucestershire[6], do join our Facebook group, which can be found here[7]. The Zone 15 parking scheme in Cheltenham has received a lot of backlash from residents for it being poorly thought throughThe Zone 15 parking scheme in Cheltenham has received a lot of backlash from residents for it being poorly thought through

People living in the north east of Cheltenham[10] have been given a "sincere apology" for the way that the new Zone 15 parking rules have been implemented by Gloucestershire County Council.

Following widespread opposition from residents, the whole scheme has been halted while multiple issues with it are fixed. More than 2,500 people signed a petition calling for the zone to either be scrapped or fixed, while a group of residents banded together[11] to highlight a myriad of issues with the zone, from cutting the number of spaces available for residents, to potentially harming access to community dentists and pharmacies.[12] Now, the scheme, which started in early September,[13] will not go live until December 15 and some of the fines handed out will be refunded.

A Gloucester[14] mother has been told she has to remove a decorative fence placed around her late son's grave. Sharna Andrews, 29, from Tredworth, says it is unfair that she can't keep the small fence which she and one of her daughters painted around her son's grave.

Her seven-year-old son Harry-Lee Andrews-Tomlinson[15] died last year after suffering a severe asthma attack. In recent months, Ms Andrews has "brightened up" her son's grave but she has now been told the fence has to go.

A planning inspector has quashed controversial plans to build a new lorry park which residents feared would harm the beautiful Cotswold[16] countryside. William Gilder Ltd's plans to build the new 75-space truck stop on land at Gloucester Road near the A417 in Stratton were rejected in March last year.

More than 370 people opposed the scheme and Cotswold District Council[17] refused planning permission over ecological, agricultural and landscape concerns. But this decision was challenged by the developer.

There are plans to update a Gloucestershire town's 20mph speed limit zone. Gloucestershire County Council is proposing changes to the existing traffic order for the 20mph speed limit on various roads in Stonehouse[20].

The proposal is to make the roads in the two existing 20mph speed limit orders into a new 20mph zone traffic order. This is to ensure they are in line with current Department for Transport[21] (DfT) guidance on the signage and enforcement of 20mph zones.

Sign writers Eleanor Harper and Mark Amis from Stroud have been entrusted with the task of restoring the ghost sign on 17 Westgate Street, GloucesterSign writers Eleanor Harper and Mark Amis from Stroud have been entrusted with the task of restoring the ghost sign on 17 Westgate Street, Gloucester

A hidden sign of a historic Gloucester[22] building's facade dating back 200 years has been unearthed. Scaffolding has been put in place at 17 Westgate Street for several months.

But in early October restorers Eleanor Harper, 32, and Mark Amis, 64, were called in to help bring the lettering back to its former glory. Officially known as sign writers and living in Stroud[23], Eleanor says the original lettering is believed to date back to the 1800s and was revealed during the recent removal of paint from the building. The lettering showcases the names of businesses that once operated within the building, including 'silk mercer, furrier, mantlemaking and costumier.'

Two medals belonging to a Falklands War veteran[24] will finally be returned after they were stolen nearly 40 years ago.

The medals were recovered yesterday (Saturday, November 4) by an officer from Gloucestershire Constabulary[25] after being spotted up for sale online.

The officer from Stroud[26] police said the medals were stolen from the man, a former paratrooper and Falkland's veteran, 39 years ago.

After being taken from his car, they will now be returned just in time for this year's Remembrance[27] celebrations.
