Thief targets Kidsgrove shop 120 miles from his home

Thief Hugh Nevin targeted a North Staffordshire business - more than 120 miles away from his home. The 50-year-old, who swiped GBP400 worth of tools from the Kidsgrove shop, was then caught out more than 50 miles from where that offence occurred. Now Nevin, of Milton Keynes, has been hauled before magistrates and hit with a suspended jail term.

The defendant was busted as he travelled through Watling Street, in Cannock, at around 4pm on November 16. Officers from Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) teamed up with dog handlers to stop the vehicle. Inside they found a raft of tools which had been stolen from the Pit Lane shop around an hour-and-a-half previously.

He went on to admit four counts of theft from a shop. The defendant was put before magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Saturday (November 18) where he was handed a 40-week prison term, suspended for two years. Another man, in his 20s, was issued with a conditional caution.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said: "We work proactively with road policing teams across Staffordshire to deter thieves, protect the public's belongings, and go after those putting others at risk on our roads."
