US-131 closes after tanker tips over, spills milk all over highway

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- US-131 was doused in milk after a tanker tipped over near downtown Grand Rapids Friday morning. The crash happened along the highway's "s-curves" close to Wealthy Street, according to Michigan State Police. The driver was uninjured in the crash.

Speed is believed to be a factor, troopers said. US-131 was shut down for hours as "milk cannot simply be washed off of the roadway," according to state police. This is because the milk can be toxic to fish in the water system, troopers said.

US-131 officially reopened to traffic at 2 p.m.

Friday.
