USD professor dies after bicycle vs car crash

VERMILLION, S.D. (KTIV) - Police in Vermillion, South Dakota say a man has died after he was hit by a car while riding a bicycle.

The Vermillion Police Department says at about 8:13 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov.

14, they got a report of a car vs bicycle crash at the intersection of E Main Street and Anderson Street.

Police say the bicyclist, 67-year-old Clayton Lehmann of Vermillion, was injured in the crash and sent to a Sioux Falls hospital where he died two days later due to his injuries.

The driver of the car, who police say is a juvenile, has not been identified at this time. Police say the crash remains under investigation.

Lehmann was a professor at the University of South Dakota's Department of History. According to the history department,[1] Lehmann had taught at USD for 35 years. He got a B.S. in comparative literature, history and Greek from Augustana College in 1978.

In 1980 he got his M.A. in ancient and classics at the University of Maryland and in 1986 he got his Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago.

The USD History Department says they'll be hosting a Celebration of Life[2] event for Lehmann on Tuesday, Nov.

21 at the MUC Ballroom, which is located on the university's campus.

The event starts at 4 p.m.
