SAN MATEO COUNTY — The man killed in a fiery crash on Highway 1 near San Gregorio has been identified as a 52-year-old Richmond resident, according to coroner’s staff. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the man on Monday as Luciano Lopez Sanchez. He died Friday afternoon when he was driving north on Highway 1 and hit a bicyclist who was on the right shoulder of the road, sending him into another vehicle and a tree.

The California Highway Patrol said the GMC Yukon that Lopez Sanchez was driving rolled over, came to rest on an embankment and erupted into flames.

Lopez Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his vehicle suffered minor injuries while the bicyclist suffered major injuries, according to the CHP.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation but the CHP said it appears Lopez Sanchez may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This is a developing report.
