VW Golf driver who caused rush-hour chaos on A38(M) told to ‘explain themselves’

A driver who dumped their car in the middle of a key Birmingham commuter route at rush hour has been asked to ‘explain themselves’ after causing chaos. The silver Volkswagen Golf was abandoned in the middle lane of the A38(M) Aston Expressway on the out-of-city carriageway just north of Dartmouth Circus on Tuesday morning, November 21. Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group had to cone off the lane ‘putting their lives at risk’.

There were traffic delays in the area. At around 9.30am, they posted on X, formerly Twitter: “To the owner of this Golf. We have your car after you left it abandoned in the middle lane of A38M.

Please contact us and explain why you walked away and made no effort to call the police. Caused unnecessary congestion and putting own lives at risk standing in middle of a motorway.” Motorists on the M6 were also held up by delays on Tuesday morning with National Highways West Midlands posting about traffic being stopped on the M6 between Junction 6, Spaghetti Junction, and Junction 5, Castle Bromwich, due to a ‘CMPG led incident’ shortly after 5.30am.

It reported delays of up to 45 minutes just before the main rush hour. This incident was caused by a two-car crash ‘which caused extensive damage to the central reservation barrier’. Three of four lanes were opened at around 6.30am.

But the fourth lane remained closed until just before 11am.

National Highways West Midlands said: “We carried emergency repairs ahead of a permanent repair at a later dat.

All lanes have since reopened.”
