A4174 crash: Person dies and man, 37, arrested after lorry overturns near Bristol

A person was killed in a crash on the A4174 near Bristol after a lorry collided with the central reservation. Avon and Somerset Police is appealing for witnesses to come forward after the serious crash shut the dual carriageway near Mangotsfield[1]. The incident involved one vehicle[2], a scaffolding lorry, which crashed into the central reservation and overturned at around 5.25pm yesterday (December 5).

Police have confirmed that a passenger who was in the vehicle died at the scene and a 37-year-old man has been arrested[3] in connection with the incident and is currently in custody. A specially trained officer is providing support to the deceased’s family as police[4] investigate what happened. It is believed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The A4174 was closed in both directions between the Dramway and Siston Hill roundabouts while initial enquiries were carried out at the scene. The road has now reopened northbound but remains closed southbound heading from Dramway towards Siston Hill. A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: “The road will remain closed until 6am tomorrow (December 7) for extensive repairs needed to resurface the carriageway and repair the vehicle restraint barrier.”

A police statement said: “We’re appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a fatal road traffic collision in South Gloucestershire[7] yesterday (Tuesday 5 December). A scaffolding lorry collided with the central reservation on the A4174 and overturned near Mangotsfield at around 5.25pm. Sadly, a passenger of the vehicle, died at the scene.

“Their next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time. A specially trained officer will provide them with support as we investigate what happened. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the incident.

“The A4174 was closed between the Dramway and Siston Hill roundabouts while initial enquiries were carried out at the scene.
