A66 crash: Man dies and five people injured after four-vehicle pile-up on sliproad

A man was killed and several others injured after a crash on a sliproad from the A66 involving several vehicles. Emergency services, including police, fire[1] crews and an air ambulance, were called to the scene on the Hartington Interchange in the aftermath of the four-vehicle crash. Motorists were advised to avoid the scene on Wednesday.

Tragically, Cleveland Police[2] later confirmed a 70-year-old man died following a medical incident. The road, a major route in the area, was closed for several hours following the crash as medical teams worked to try to save the life of the man, who is understood to not be from the Teesside area.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said said: “A 70-year-old man has sadly passed away following a medical episode which led to a four-vehicle collision on the A66 Hartington slip lane, yesterday morning (Wednesday, December 6). The road was closed for several hours following the collision at 8:40am, whilst medical teams worked to try to save the man’s life.

“The 44-year-old man travelling with the 70-year-old man in the white Mercedes Sprinter van, suffered a sprained ankle. Both men were from outside of the Teesside area. The driver of a blue Toyota Corolla taxi, a 22-year-old man, and his passenger, a 55-year-old woman, both sustained minor injuries.

The driver of a white Peugeot 208, an 18-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old woman driving a black Audi A1 also suffered minor injuries.” A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service added three patients were transported by road to The James Cook University Hospital for further treatment. They said: “We received a call at 8.38am this morning (Wednesday 6 December) to reports of a road traffic incident on the A66 in Middlesbrough.

We dispatched three ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical leader, and requested the support of our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended via air.”
