Akron police searching for hit-and-run driver who sent two elderly women to the ICU

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Akron police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who crashed into a car full of grandmas and sent two of the elderly women to the hospital.

19 News learned the three Akron seniors were on their way home from a church event at around 7:30 Tuesday evening. They were driving down East Market Street when a blue truck hit them from behind and ran them off the road. The crash was so bad they even knocked down a tree and took out a road sign.

"They need to be held accountable for what they did," said one of the victim's daughters, Alanna Overholt. "There were some serious injuries, it's not okay."

Overholt's 77-year-old mother was behind the wheel.

Her aunt and their friend were also in the car.

"I just don't want this person to go out and do this again to somebody else you know?"

Her mom wasn't hurt but her aunt and their friend spent a night in the ICU. They suffered concussions, brain bleeds, and several fractures.

"They have severe concussions and they're beat up pretty bad, so you don't really know what's in the future for yourself after an injury like that. There can be you know memory loss, severe headaches I mean there's a lot that could go on and they're older so it's just extremely upsetting that this person did this and just took off."

Akron police body camera video captured the moments after the crash that happened near the Ellet branch of the Akron library.

Unfortunately, the police don't have much to go on.

All they know is they were hit by a blue truck that likely has front-end damage.

"These are three older ladies that are traumatized at this point somebody needs to step up. If they have any information, if they know somebody who's been in an accident in the area. It's right before the holidays."

19 News reached out to the library to see if their cameras captured the hit-skip crash but unfortunately, they did not.
