Apartment plans for Grade II-listed pub on edge of Peak District set for green light

A scheme to turn a pub[1], which in parts dates back to the 16th century, into a series of apartments has taken a step closer to being approved. Plans to turn the former White Lion Hotel, in Buxton, into 13 apartments have been recommended for approval at a planning meeting this month. The Grade II-listed building dates back to the 16th century, with the Holker Road site becoming a coaching inn[2] sometime between the 18th and 19th century.

It was during this time that the premises became known as The White Lion, with the building growing in size over the next 200 years. The four-storey building has been closed for some time, excluding a fleeting rebrand as an artisan market. A statement from the applicant states: “Its use as a pub kept going until the early 2000s[3] but by then the writing was on the wall.

Despite many failed attempts to sell as a going concern, the building eventually closed its doors for good more or less a decade ago.” POLL: What’s the best thing to do in Derbyshire on a rainy day?[4] The proposal is to be ruled on at this month’s High Peak Borough Council Development Control Committee meeting.

If successful, the former pub and its associated outbuildings would be converted into 13 apartments – nine one-bed homes and four two-bed flats. The application has been recommended for approval by a planning officer. A final decision will be made on Monday, December 11 .
