Arrest made as man fights for life after hit and run

An arrest was made as a man was fighting for life after being hit by a car. Police were called to Northway, close to the Shell petrol station in Maghull[1] at around 6.55am today, Wednesday, December 27. The incident involved a cyclist who had been hit by a car.

The driver of what was understood to be a Skoda Octavia failed to stop at the scene. The cyclist, in his 50s, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In an update this afternoon, Merseyside Police[4] said officers had arrested a 49-year-old man from the Southport[5] area.

A car had also been recovered. The man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision and failing to report a road traffic collision. He is currently in custody.

A spokesperson for the force said an investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Officers are also continuing to appeal for anyone who was driving along Northway at around 6.55am this morning to check their dash cam to see if they captured the crash or the movements of a Skoda Octavia either before or afterwards. A roads policing officer who was attending the scene was hit by a car while responding to the hit and run[6].

He was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which police said were not thought to be life-threatening. Officers confirmed the driver of the car, a man in his 60s, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs.
