Bishop’s Waltham fatal crash: Motorists’ efforts to help victim
The 37-year-old was on his way to work when he heard a “bang” on Winchester[1] Road. Showing no hesitation, he and other motorists abandoned their cars to help a motorcyclist who lay dying on the road. “I heard a bang, and everyone got out of their cars to try to help,” he said.
“One of the guys that came knew the area quite well and just said ‘We need to find a defibrillator’. “But by the time we went to get it, the ambulance was already on the way.” As he realised the seriousness of the situation, the dad-of-two, who works as a roofer and asked not to be named, rushed to get the road cleared.
He said: “I didn’t want to get too close to the guy, so I just worked to try to close the road because there were a lot of people there trying to help. “Because at that point the police weren’t there and they took about 20 minutes to arrive, it was up to us to get the road closed as there was a lot of traffic. “Everyone was trying to help him, but a guy turned around to me and said it didn’t look too good for him.
After a while, we were all told that the guy had died.” Police confirmed the 33-year-old from Clanfield died at the scene. He was riding a Lexmoto Diablo when he collided with a Ford Ranger just after 7.20am.
The kind stranger said: “My heart goes out to the family of the victim, these things are never easy but especially so close to Christmas, they must be distraught. “When I saw that he was a young lad, I thought about my two children, and I can’t help but think that no one leaves the house thinking that it would be their last time. “I can’t help but feel for the family and those he leaves behind.”
A 43-year-old man from Bishop’s Waltham was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless and inconsiderate driving[2]. The road was closed to traffic in both directions for most of the morning. Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A police spokesperson said: “If you have any information that may assist us, or relevant dash-cam footage, please call 101 quoting reference 44230516645 or report online via our website.”
