BMW driver lashes out after being stopped for illegal window tints in Coventry

A frustrated driver lashed out at police after he was stopped for having his windows illegally tinted in Coventry[1]. He was detained on Kenilworth Road[2] earlier today (Friday, December 1). Officers escorted the 57-year-old man into War Memorial Park[3] at around 11.15am.

He quickly became irate as he was ordered to remove the heavily tinted stickers from the front side windows of his BMW[4]. Cops later said that the man was no longer detained but he refused to leave, saying that they had ‘overstepped the mark.’ He could then be heard saying: ‘I will stay here for another 10 hours.’ Drivers must ensure that their front side windows allow at least 70 per cent of light through or they risk being fined by the DVSA.

It ensures that more vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, are visible in low-light conditions, says GOV.UK[6]. Officers made the stop as part of a citywide crackdown on road safety over Christmas[7]. Chief Inspector Dave Amos said they will be targeting those who ‘pose a risk to public safety.’

Speaking to CoventryLive[8], Dave Amos, of Coventry Police[9], said: “We are here today (December 1) and will be throughout the festive season making sure that we target those that are creating a public safety risk.”

He added: “Your legal duties as the owner and driver of a vehicle are plain to see and The Highway Code tells you exactly what you need to do. If it is a frosty morning, make sure you have de-iced the windscreen and all of the windows properly before you set out on a journey. “We have mentioned roadworthiness, so make sure that your tyres are legal and make sure that you have working lights because they are important factors when you decide to set out on any journey, let alone a frosty morning at the start of the festive season.”
