Brading crash that injured track workers investigated
A railway crash that left two maintenance workers in hospital is to be investigated by the government. It follows a collision between a road-rail vehicle and a hand trolley on the Isle of Wight. The crash happened on the tracks between Smallbrook Junction and Brading, on the Island Line, during overnight maintenance work on 22 November.
South Western Railway maintains the track on the island. At the time of the accident, the Island Line was closed to normal services and the road-rail vehicle was used as part of the work. The hand trolley had been placed on the railway and struck and injured the track workers who were standing nearby.
The investigation, which is independent of the industry’s regulator Office of Rail and Road, will seek to identify the sequence of events that led to the collision. It will also consider the management and actions of the railway staff involved and the policies and procedures for operations. No damage was caused to the road-rail vehicle or to the trolley involved.
