Car bursts into flames on A47 in Leicestershire

The A47 in Leicestershire was closed in both directions this morning after a car burst into flames. Firefighters were called to Hinckley Road[1] between Beggars Lane and Kirby Lane, in Leicester Forest Eas[2] t, at 9.32am. A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS)[3] said the driver reported that her car was smoking before it caught fire.

The entire vehicle was engulfed when the crew arrived at the scene. The woman was not injured in the incident, the fire service said. Leicestershire Police[4] closed the road while the incident was dealt with. Highways officers were requested to attend due to damage, debris and fluid on the road after the fire.

The road reopened at around 11.30am. A fire service spokesperson said: “The incident was handed over the the police and the cause was accidental, believed to be an electric fault. Unfortunately, the car could not be saved.”
