Channel 5 Traffic Cops shows Derbyshire police use plane to chase suspected car thieves

The use of a police plane to hunt down a suspected car thief who is on the run features in the latest episode of TV’s Traffic Cops [1]. Sneak peek footage from the Channel 5 programme, which can be viewed at the top of this article, shows the plane following a suspect through unsuspecting residents’ gardens in a Derbyshire town. The video shows three suspects in Chesterfield being apprehended by officers on the ground, however one suspect is still missing.

Utilising a police plane, officers narrow down their search to a garden [2] in a residential area of the town. A spokesperson for the show said: “In Derbyshire, catching car thieves is a daily challenge for the Traffic Cops [3], as organised gangs use high-tech scanners to hack into keyless cars, allowing them to unlock and steal a car in less than a minute. In this episode, officers respond to a call from a member of the public reporting a house burglary and their stolen car.

After a high-speed pursuit, four men are caught and the stolen car is recovered along with a stash of stolen goods including expensive jewellery.”

The programme, which is narrated by Jamie Theakston, was first broadcast on the BBC from 2003 to 2016, before moving to Channel 5 in 2017. The latest series focuses on Derbyshire’s road policing teams and features a behind-the-scenes look at how the county’s officers deal with traffic-related incidents on our roads. The chase features in the latest episode of Traffic Cops which will be shown on Channel 5 at 8pm tonight, Wednesday, December 27.
