Christmas in custody for man who allegedly caused fatal hit-and-run Yolla crash

A Wynyard who spent the weekend on the run from Police after he allegedly left the scene of a fatal crash that claimed the life of a Malaysian tourist will spend Christmas in custody. Grant Andrew Crawford, 52, did not enter a plea to charges including manslaughter and causing death by negligent driving[1] when he appeared in the Burnie Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Crawford was taken into custody by Police on Monday[2], who formally charged him with several serious offences on Tuesday. Investigators allege he ran from the crash, which injured two men and killed another, on the Murchison Highway near Yolla just after 9am on Friday.

They will also allege he was driving a vehicle stolen from Somerset earlier this month and that he was on the wrong side of the road[3] at the time.
Western District Commander Stuart Wilkinson said the 43-year-old Malaysian man who lost his life was part of a group of international motorcyclists touring Tasmania.

“It was a very nasty site, I’ve seen images of the scene, it would be very confronting,” Commander Wilkinson said on Monday.
Crawford is scheduled to appear again in the Burnie Magistrates Court on January 15th.
