Critically-injured man climbed into police car and said he had been stabbed
Police have released further details of a stabbing in the city centre earlier this year. Leicestershire Police[1] rushed to Belgrave Gate after getting several reports of an assault. When they arrived, the victim, who had been stabbed at least 17 times, approached a police car, got into the vehicle and told the officers he had been stabbed. He was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition as other officers began hunting for the attacker, Kai Turner.
Turner, who was 20 at the time of the attack on Friday, January 27,[2] had been out in the city with his victim and had turned on him, attempting to kill him with the knife. Several witnesses, as well as CCTV evidence, helped police identify the victim and Turner. Turner, now 21, of Lee Bank, Middleway, Birmingham, was chased and arrested nearby.
He was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court[4] on Friday last week. Because of his severe mental illness, Judge Phillip Head decided it was best to confine Turner to hospital instead of sending him to prison. He was given a hospital order, which means he will be held for treatment indefinitely.
Turner had pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possessing a blade in public. The victim is expected to make a full recovery but the psychological impact is expected to remain for a long time. Commenting on the case, Detective Sergeant Gemma Allen, who was the investigating officer, said: “The victim was stabbed more than 17 times during the attack.
Even though he is slowly recovering from the injuries he sustained, the mental scars will remain with him for much longer. “We are pleased Turner has admitted to the offences and spared the victim the ordeal of reliving the events of that evening in court.” She said Leicestershire Police were working to educate people to prevent knife crime in the city.
She said: “Turner was carrying a knife and had no qualms in using it, not just once but multiple times. “There is absolutely no excuse for his actions – it’s a miracle a life wasn’t lost that day. “We take knife crime extremely seriously and are constantly educating and informing people of the dangers of carrying a knife and the consequences.”
