Devon funeral notices: Adoring dad dies weeks before Christmas

People have said their final goodbyes to loved ones from around Devon who have died just before Christmas[1] in more than 80 funeral notices. Among them is adoring dad and grandad John Tucker from North Devon[2] who died earlier this month. Paying tribute to him, John’s family say he will remembered for his love of fast cars, woodwork, sport and his cheerful nature.

Every week we pay tribute to cherished members of our community by announcing the Devon death and funeral notices. Last week the family of Patricia and John Spiller[3] announced that the devoted couple had died within three days of each other and said they would be “sadly missed by all who knew and loved them”. The notices, along with acknowledgements and in memoriams, are initially published to funeral-notices.co.uk which offers a permanent space for loved ones to add their own tributes.

They can also add photos and donations, should they wish to.[4] The most up-to-date death and funeral notices in Devon can be found here[5]. Below are the notices from earlier this week:

(10/02/1932 – 30/11/2023) Marjorie was the daughter of Winifred and Sam Tamblyn, sister to Percy, Howard and Avril, step-sister to Betty, Violet, Ruby, Tom, Ernest and Bill. Born at Penhale in Lanlivery in 1932, Marjorie went to Luxulyan School, Bugle and Treverbyn.

On leaving school, Marjorie worked as a domestic for a short time, then worked at Warrick Stores, Tregonissey, until getting married in 1953 to Fred, a widower, when she also became step-mother to John, Ken and Jenny. In 1955, Marjorie and Fred welcomed their son, Adrian. In time, the couple had 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren between them.

In 1960, Marjorie began working part-time in what was the St Austell Grammar School canteen, then as Assistant Cook at Bodmin Grammar School, then as Cook-in-Charge at Luxulyan Primary School where she worked until 1976. Regardless of the weather[18] (rain, wind or snow!), Marjorie would walk or cycle to school as she didn’t want to let the children down when they needed to be fed. Marjorie loved hearing the children say “Thank you Miss” when they enjoyed the meals she had cooked.

After retiring, Marjorie enjoyed going on many holidays with her husband Fred, including a trip to Australia to visit relatives. She also travelled to America for a few weeks’ holiday with her niece Carol. Marjorie enjoyed singing and was a member of the Champagne Ladies Choir for a number of years.

She enjoyed playing the organ, having lessons and practising at home. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing, although Fred perhaps didn’t enjoy this as much as her! Marjorie and Fred enjoyed frequent walks with Violet and Thory, her step-sister and brother-in-law.

The couple shared a love of their garden and Marjorie continued with her love of cooking, using the produce that Fred had grown. As well as her own interests, Marjorie also helped Fred with his Heavy Transport Charity work, assisting and helping to organise events, raffles etc. Marjorie and Fred lived in Rescorla for a number of years but moved to Roslyn Close in St Austell, then to a cottage in Sandy Hill, until their ultimate move to a bungalow in Whieldon Close, Holmbush, as it was close to many amenities within walking distance of their home.

Marjorie was a caring person who looked after Fred when his eyesight deteriorated as a result of Age Related Macular Degeneration, becoming his carer during the final years of his life following his Cancer diagnosis. After Fred passed away in July 2018, Marjorie continued to live in their bungalow in Holmbush. Unfortunately, Marjorie was suffering with the early stages of dementia and, in 2022, she had a fall which resulted in a broken wrist.

A separate fall within a few days of the first injury resulted in her breaking her hip, plus a sprain to her other wrist. After a hip operation and treatment in hospital, it was unfortunate that Marjorie could not return to her home as she needed more care and support whilst recovering from her operation. She was transferred to a care home in Liskeard for a short period but the family were able to find a place for her closer to them.

Marjorie moved to The White House care home in Bodmin in August 2022, where she received excellent care, support and love from all the staff over the last 15 months. Despite her dementia, Marjorie never lost her sense of humour and her family enjoyed the time they spent with her on their visits. After a brief illness in late November, Marjorie sadly passed away on 30 November 2023, aged 91.

Marjorie’s Funeral will take place at Glyn Valley Crematorium, Bodmin Tuesday 19th December at 3.30pm O’CONNOR Jonathan George Beloved and cherished son of Ken and Gwenda (deceased) and ‘best brother ever’ of Christine.
