Diversion routes as M5 shut for hours

Diversion routes are in place on the M5 near Cullompton after a lorry crash shut the carriageway. The southbound side of the motorway is shut between Junction 27 and Junction 29 after the large vehicle overturned and blocked all three lanes.[1] Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly before 8am.

Police say the road is likely to remain shut for ‘some time’ and officers are urging drivers to avoid the area. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “One person is reported to have been injured but the injuries are not thought to be serious at this time.” National Highways South West has confirmed the M5[2] south is shut between Tiverton[3] and Exeter[4] and is set to remain closed for several hours.

Road users are advised to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Follow the A38 to the roundabout with the B3181 at Waterloo Cross and take the 2nd exit onto the B3181 southbound.
  • Follow the B3181 southbound through Willand to Cullompton.

From Cullompton follow the solid triangle diversion symbol

  • Continue southbound on the B3181, passing through Cullompton, Westcott, Budlake (running parallel to the M5) and Broadclyst until the junction with Cumberland Way
  • Join Cumberland Way southbound and then at the next roundabout continue straight over onto Moor Lane
  • Continue southbound to then re-join the M5 at J30
