Dog owners convinced their pet knows Santa
A third of the nation’s dog owners believe their pet loves Christmas[1] more than they do, according to new research from pet insurance brand, ManyPets[2]. Over a quarter even believe their pooch recognises Santa Claus and are convinced their dog knows that Christmas is a special day in the calendar. Two thirds of owners think their furry friend shows visible excitement over Christmas thanks to Christmas dinner, the buzz of increased guests in the house, and the opportunity to play with wrapping paper.ManyPets has revealed that UK pet owners are set to spend up to GBP17 million on presents for their pets this Christmas.
Leon Towers, dog behaviourist said: “Pets adore the festive period as its a time for cheer and happiness with their favourite humans. Thanks to their amazing senses and intuition, there’s a whole host of reasons why dogs enjoy Christmas just as much as we do.”
70% of owners agree that it’s also a period where extra caution should be taken to ensure the safety of our dogs. Two thirds agree that unsuitable foods such as mince pies and Christmas pudding are a cause for concern, while having additional chocolate in the house, and loud noises from things such as crackers are things to be mindful of.
ManyPets resident vet Dr Kirsten Ronngren said: “We know how much humans enjoy the holiday season, and it’s lovely to see our pets getting in on all the fun too. As a valued family member, they deserve a festive time filled with warmth, treats, and the same comfort they bring into our lives every day. It’s essential however, pet owners make sure to be extra vigilant too – not everything that Christmas brings is safe for our pets.
Think about things like guests, travel, gifts, and food!
Plan ahead and be sure your pets’ health (in addition to fun) is also at the forefront this time of year.”
