Dr Judith Fisher, 84: Doctor who helped to improve medical care at scene of accidents
One evening in the 1950s Judith Fisher was driving with her cousin back from a restaurant in Northumberland when she came across a motorbike accident.
As a medical student who volunteered with ambulance crews, her immediate instinct was to tend to the casualty on the side of the road.
Yet her skills were limited, and the incident brought to mind the need for specialised training in pre-hospital immediate care.
Judith went on to become a GP, based in Fareham, Hampshire, while also working in the Flying Squad of the accident and emergency team at Southampton General Hospital.
It informed her understanding of what was needed and she would go on to help to save thousands of lives because of her suggested improvements in the provision
