Drink driver crashes and ends up upside down on Nottingham Canal towpath
A man who crashed his car through a wall and onto a canal path following a night out has been handed a lengthy road ban. Paul Pollard, aged 60, had a lucky escape after the BMW he’d been drink-driving landed upside down next to Nottingham Canal. He left the scene, in Great Northern Close, but was found nearby by officers and arrested after witnesses called 999.
Pollard blew 97 on a roadside breath test – almost three times the legal limit – following the crash shortly after 3am on 19 August. A subsequent blood sample gave a reading of 141 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.

Pollard, of Preston Close, Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire, was treated in hospital for minor injuries before being taken into custody.
During a police interview, he told officers he had gone out drinking in the city centre after attending Nottingham Forest’s fixture against Sheffield United at the City Ground, where he’d also been drinking in a hospitality box. He told officers that following the match, he’d had three pints of lager in the city centre before driving to Leonardo Hotel, off London Road, where he had booked a room for the night. CCTV showed him parked up in a small car park near to the hotel.
The lights of the BMW – which was a company car – were on and the engine was still running. Just after 3am, footage captured the BMW suddenly accelerating forwards. It crashed through a wall and flipped over onto a canal path.
