Driver: ‘Install cameras at Lime Kiln lights before someone’s killed’

A motorist is calling for traffic light cameras to be installed at one of Stoke-on-Trent’s worst accident blackspots – after the latest smash. Keith Mellor, from Baddeley Edge, wants Stoke-on-Trent City Council to install the safety measures at Lime Kiln lights. It follows fears that a driver will be killed at the busy crossroads linking Abbey Hulton, Bucknall, Northwood and Joiners Square without the additional safety measure.

The cameras would see drivers hit with GBP70 fixed-penalty fines. In a letter to The Sentinel, Keith writes: “It is only a matter of time before there is a fatal collision at this very busy junction. On every approach drivers hurtle through on amber and red in a desperate rush to save a couple of minutes.

“The worst offenders are those who wish to turn right from Leek Road towards Bucknall, Bentilee and Werrington with as many as three or four vehicles ignoring the red lights as the lights turn green for drivers travelling to and from Hanley, up or down the bank. If ever there was a place to put traffic light cameras to stop this stupidity then it is at Lime Kiln. Come on councillors get on with some installation – you will save lives and make a fortune in fines!”
