The junction was temporarily closed as officers dealt with the incident.

They were alerted to reports that the male driver of the Astra had made off from the scene.

He was described as between 5ft 9ins and 6ft tall, of thin build, with a dark, scruffy beard, and wearing a dark-coloured hooded anorak, dark tracksuit bottoms and a beanie hat. Roads policing team PC Kier Dagnall said: “This incident resulted in the closure of a major junction, and it is fortunate that no one was seriously injured. “I would like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding during the closure.

“We are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the collision.”

Witnesses were urged to come forward, including those who saw the vehicles being driven before the crash. An appeal was also made for those who may have captured relevant dash cam footage. PC Dagnall added: “I would also urge the driver who allegedly made off from the scene to come forward and contact us so we can hear their account of the incident.”
