Driver who fled UK after crash living in Texas with his parents

An American driver, who fled the UK after allegedly causing a car crash that left a nurse seriously injured[1], has been tracked down by a news team. Issac Calderon, 22, who is wanted by West Mercia Police, is now with his parents in Texas, his father told Sky News. Elizabeth Donowho, 56, was left unable to walk for six weeks after breaking both of her ankles and suffering a fractured sternum and a broken bone in her hand.

Calderon, who was accused of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in the July crash near Shucknall, had been due to appear before magistrates on Dec 1. Yet a warrant for his arrest was issued when he failed to appear. However, Calderon has now been tracked down to his family’s detached house in a residential street in Humble, Texas.

‘Struggling to support himself’

His father Manuel Calderon, told Sky News that his son was back at home and claimed the situation had been “blown out of proportion”.

He said his son had been in the UK on a work visa and had recently been employed in a warehouse but he couldn’t recall the name of the company. He added that he’d paid for him to fly home in November because he was “struggling to support himself” and to help him seek further medical treatment following the collision. Ms Donowho, of Malvern, Worcestershire, has previously told journalists that West Mercia Police said Calderon was working on matters “that might come under the Official Secrets Act”.

However, he has been described by the US Embassy as a “private citizen”. Manuel Calderon told Sky News that his son is part of the American National Guard and said he serves “a few weeks a year”.

‘We are engaging with his solicitor’

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “On Friday Dec 1 2023 at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court a warrant was issued for the arrest of Issac Calderon, 22, who is wanted for failure to appear at court on a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. “Mr Calderon is an American citizen who we understand was in the UK on a work visa.

Our enquiries have established that he left the UK on Nov 25 and flew to the United States.

“We are engaging with his solicitor to inform him of the warrant and the need for him to return to the UK.”
