Driver’s ‘medical episode’ sparked major emergency response on A55

The A55 was closed in both directions after a driver suffered a “medical episode”. Emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway between Abergwyngregyn and Tal Y Bont amid reports of a crash just before midday.[1] When they arrived on the scene, it was apparent that the driver was suffering from a medical episode.

The carriageway was then closed in both directions so the air ambulance could land at the scene. Medics performed “advanced critical care support” at the scene of the incident. No details were provided about whether the motorist was taken to hospital.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today (Dec 19), at approximately 11.47am, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A55[4] near Abergwygregyn. We sent one emergency ambulance to the scene where advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service who travelled in a Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopter.” Drivers were urged to seek an alternative route while emergency crews worked at the scene.

The road was reopened just before 1pm.
