Drug driving arrest after elderly woman hit while crossing road

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after an elderly woman was hit by a car. Greater Manchester Police was called to Gidlow Lane in Wigan[1] at around 4.25pm on Tuesday, December 19, following reports of a woman being hit by a car. Once officers arrived at the scene they found an 82-year-old was hit by a Toyota CHR.

The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the car remained at the scene, MEN reports[2].

A 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and causing serious injury by careless driving.

Police believe that before the crash, the Toyota CHR left the Tesco[5] car park on Gidlow Lane and began to travel in a southerly direction. It hit the woman as she crossed the road near Knowsley[6] Road. Officers at Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

They are keen to speak to anyone with phone or dashcam footage of the crash. Officers can be contacted on 0161 856 4741 quoting reference number of 2406 of 19/12/2023.
