Elderly woman, 82, fighting for life after being hit by car in Gateshead
A woman aged 82 is fighting for her life in hospital after being seriously injured following a crash in Gateshead[1]. Shortly before 4.10pm on Monday, December 18, police received a report of a pedestrian being hit by a car near Aldi on Easedale Gardens in Wrekenton[2]. It was reported that a grey Dacia Sandero had been driving in away from Wrekenton when, for reasons yet to be established, it struck a female pedestrian on the road.
Emergency services attended the scene and found an 82-year-old woman had suffered "serious, life-threatening injuries". She was taken to hospital and remains there in a critical condition. The driver of the car, a 56-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He has since been released on police bail. A 63-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the report, and has since been released under investigation. Officers from the Northumbria Police[3] motor patrols department are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Sgt Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a very serious collision which has left a woman fighting for her life in hospital. "A number of enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what has happened in the lead up to the collision and establish the full circumstances. We know the area was very busy at the time with lots of people and vehicles - so there will be more witnesses who saw what happened.
"Please help us by getting in touch as soon as possible if you saw a grey Dacia Sandero driving in the area or the female pedestrian - wearing a pink coat. Your information, no matter how small it may seem, could prove vital in the early stages of our investigation." Officers are particularly keen to hear from any witnesses who were in the area at the time, and may have CCTV or dashcam footage which could assist their investigation.
Anyone with information should use the 'Tell Us Something' page of the Northumbria Police website or call 101, quoting log number NP-20231218-0730.
