Emergency incident in Marlands Car Park: here’s what we know

Firefighters were called to the Marlands Car Park in Civic Centre Road just before 3pm yesterday, extinguishing a blaze that had broken out from a car. They prevented it spreading to nearby vehicles and Hampshire police were also at the scene. A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from St Mary’s and Redbridge were on the scene to extinguish the car, preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby vehicles.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used jets to stop the fire which caused approximately 30 per cent damage to the car.” The fire service confirmed that no injuries were reported at the scene. Both fire crews left the scene shortly after 4pm.

Police confirmed it was not being treated as an arson and they were there to support the fire service.

The incident led to traffic delays[2] in the city centre as people went home for Christmas and did their final bits of shopping.

But delays quickly cleared once the emergency services left the scene.
