‘Fatalities’ and five in hospital after bus, car and motorbike collide
Five people have been taken to hospital after what’s being described as a fatal crash involving a motorbike, car and a bus in Rhondda[1] Cynon Taf on Monday, December 11. South Wales Police[2] said emergency services were at the scene of a “serious incident” in Elwyn Street in Coedely, Tonyrefail, which is currently closed. The road is expected to be closed until the morning. In a statement on social media at 7.41pm, South Wales Police said: “Emergency services are at Elwyn Street, Coedely in Tonyrefail dealing with a serious incident.
The road will be closed for some time and there is traffic build up on the A4119. Please use an alternative route, Thank you for your patience.” At around 8pm, the Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed to WalesOnline the incident involved a bike and a bus and said it had sent nine emergency ambulances to the scene.
A spokesperson said: “We’ve got confirmation of an incident – an RTC [road traffic collision] was reported [involving] a bike and a bus at 7pm today.” The spokesperson added that it was a head-on collision, the incident is still ongoing and it was a motorbike that was involved. The service later confirmed a car was also involved in the collision, and said there were “fatalities involved”. The spokesperson added four casualties have been conveyed from the scene to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, and a fifth patient has been taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Talbot Green. Alex Davies-Jones, MP for Pontypridd[9], said the road was expected to be closed until the morning. She said in a statement on Facebook[10]: “Elwyn Street, Coedely, near the Stowford Caravan site is currently closed while emergency services attend a serious incident. The road will be closed for some time, likely until the morning, and there will be significant traffic build up on the A4119.
Please use alternative routes. Thank you for your patience while emergency services close the road to attend the scene.” Meanwhile, Rhondda MS Buffy Williams also wrote on Facebook and said she was “hope and praying that those involved aren’t seriously injured”.
She said: “I’ve received a call from South Wales Police to confirm they are currently at the scene of a serious collision in Coedely. There are very many reports on Facebook, some with differing information. Please refrain from adding to the rumours or speculation, a further statement will be made by South Wales Police in due course.
Hoping and praying that those involved aren’t seriously injured, and thank you to the emergency services for their response again this evening.”
