Fire at Westbourne House homeless shelter under investigation

Emergency services were called to a fire at Westbourne House in Hull last night. It is understood four people were rescued from the building, which is used as sheltered accommodation for homeless people. One person was taken to hospital for treatment.

A resident from nearby Hinderwell Street said: “I got back home from Newland Avenue just before 11. I was first aware something was up when noticed flashing blue lights behind my house. “I thought it was Pearson Park, but it turned out to be Westbourne House.

I went out and saw three fire engines, two ambulances, two police cars and at least twelve firefighters, with a hose, at about 11.45pm. “There was a ladder up on the house too. I couldn’t see any fire or smoke, but there was a burning smell on other side of Princes Avenue from it.

I really hope everyone’s ok, looked serious with all the blue lights.”
