Firefighter ‘injured in altercation’ after crash closes M62
A firefighter was injured by a man after a crash closed the M62[1] motorway near North Cave, the fire service has said. The two-vehicle crash closed the motorway westbound last night (Thursday). Witnesses said they believed that a van and a car were involved.
Fire crews were called to help, though no one was trapped. However, a man had to be removed from one of the vehicles by firefighters and police officers. The man then caused an injury to a firefighter’s face, during what was described as an “altercation”, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said.
The vehicles were stabilised and the incident was left with the police. The crash happened between junctions 37-38 (Howden and North Cave). Firefighters were called at 7.46pm.
Motorists said traffic was diverted at the North Cave interchange, where the A63[2] joins the motorway. One described being stuck for nearly two hours because they had already passed the junction when the crash happened. Another witness described seeing: “Dozens of blue lights and [a] helicopter.”
In an update on its website, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Two vehicle RTC – no persons trapped. One adult male removed from vehicle by police and fire service. Male caused injury to firefighters face during altercation.
Vehicles stabilised using chocks and blocks.
Incident left with police.”
Further details will follow.
