First look at new Scunthorpe police station plans

Plans for a new police station in the heart of Scunthorpe have been unveiled. If approved, the building would be home to up to 200 police officers and staff. It would be built on land next to the new enterprise and innovation hub[1] in High Street.

The first images of how the new HQ could look show a striking glass-fronted building with a jagged roof design that matches the hub. A formal planning application is due to be submitted in the coming days. Cllr Rob Waltham, the leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Working with a range of partners and with millions of pounds of Government cash – we are creating a new, vibrant town centre – diversifying the high street and bringing new people into the town for new reasons.

Having a centrally located police station is a huge part of this – with the police officers included, the enterprise hub will bring upwards of 450 people into the heart of the town every day, which will be a huge boost. “I’m pleased we have been able to act on residents’ feedback – lots of people have told us they would welcome a stronger and more visible police presence in the town centre – so to deliver on this priority alongside Humberside Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner is brilliant.”

The plans are part of an ambitious scheme to reshape Scunthorpe’s high street, with around GBP90m of government backing. The new building would replace the existing police station in Corporation Road. Jonathan Evison, the Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “The existing Scunthorpe Police Station has served the town well for decades but does not reflect the high standard and working environment required by a police force in the 21st Century.

I’m pleased to be working with North Lincolnshire Council and Humberside Police to build this new police station which will improve the service to the public and provide better working conditions for police officers and staff.” Holly Mumby-Croft, the MP for Scunthorpe and vice-chair of the Towns Fund Board, which is helping to manage the investment, said: “The investment in Scunthorpe continues at pace. Only last week we received a further GBP16m from Government, which will be used to create more jobs and new town centre homes.

“In total we’ve seen GBP100m in Government cash committed to North Lincolnshire – this is huge support that will make a real difference – building a new police station, re-purposing vacant shops, delivering ultrafast broadband and creating Discover, a new hands-on science and technology centre for families. There are exciting times ahead for Scunthorpe.” Funding for the transformation of Scunthorpe includes GBP41m from the Towns Fund, GBP10m in Future High Street funding, GBP36m from the Levelling-Up Fund for Scunthorpe and Barton, and almost GBP6m through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
