Guests at hotel ‘woken by screams’ as mass brawl ends with three people being stabbed
People staying at a city centre hotel were woken by 'screams and shouting' close to where a mass brawl which ended in a triple stabbing broke out. A man has been left fighting for life after violence broke out in Liverpool city centre shortly before 5.30am this morning (Wednesday, December 27). Two others were also wounded in the incident.
Detectives say the incident began as a 'disturbance' involving a 'large group of males' on Victoria Street. Officers on patrol then found a man in his 20s at the junction of Church Street and Whitechapel, close to the McDonald's restaurant, with stab wounds.
His condition has been described as critical.
Two other men, also in their 20s, took themselves to hospital where one was treated for a stab wound to the back and the other a laceration to the head, the Liverpool Echo reports.[3] This morning uniformed police officers stood at the door to The Safehouse nightclub on Victoria Street, while forensic investigators could be seen going to and from from the property. A large cordon remained in place, blocking off part of Church Street, including several high street shops and restaurants.
A large cordon was put in placeStaff at the Sir Thomas Hotel, on the opposite side of Victoria Street to the Safehouse, said guests had reported being woken by screaming and shouting in the early hours of the morning when asked how their stay was.
Over on Church Street, discarded medical equipment including a sheet and medical gloves could be seen a few metres from the entrance to McDonald's at the junction with Lord Street and Paradise Street. Earlier today Superintendent Helen Bennett, of Merseyside Police, said: "Urgent CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are being carried out in the city centre and as such a large area has been cordoned off. "It appears that a large disturbance took place on Victoria Street in which three people have been injured.
We know that there were people in the city centre who may have witnessed the disturbance or possibly come to the assistance of the injured males and we would ask those people to come forward and speak to officers as soon as possible.
"Incidents such as are unacceptable and we will do everything within our powers to find the people responsible and bring them to justice."
