‘He still struggles’

Radio host Jeff Stelling and pundit Ally McCoist have mocked Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s defence of goalkeeper Emi Martinez. It comes after Martinez[1] pulled Brentford striker Neal Maupay up by his shirt, sparking a melee that saw Boubacar Kamara[2] pick up a red card. Speaking after the match, Emery defended Martinez, calling him a “very responsible” and “very mature” player.

Emery[3] said: “He’s very, very responsible, he’s very mature. At the end of the match, he was a little bit upset with some provocation, he tried to keep balance, but I think it’s not very relevant.”

On Monday morning, Stelling and McCoist were discussing Emery’s comments on talkSPORT.

Stelling said: “Well clearly Ally, he still struggles with some elements of the English language when he says Emi Martinez is very responsible. Because they are two words that could not apply to him, could they?” McCoist replied: “He’s effectively not – he’s the opposite.

I actually wrote those two words down, ‘responsible’ and ‘mature’. And I put a question mark after both of them, because that’s the last thing he is! “I thought his antics at the World Cup final – listen I know you’re excited that you just won the World Cup – but I thought they were embarrassing.

Particularly against a man [Kylian Mbappe] who’s just stuck the ball past him four times including the penalty [in the shootout].

It was amazing.”
