Hero bystander battled in vain to keep Leek Road crash victim alive

A hero bystander rushed to the aid of a driver found in a ‘critical’ condition after a two-car crash. They provided ‘basic life support’ before paramedics arrived at the scene. But there was nothing the medics could do and the Dacia driver – a man in his 40s – was pronounced dead at the Royal Stoke University Hospital[1].

It comes as Staffordshire Police are still to name the driver. The driver of the other car was taken to the Royal Stoke with ‘serious injuries’. He today remains in a ‘stable’ condition at the Royal Stoke.

Staffordshire Police[2] and West Midlands Ambulance Service[3] were called to Leek Road, in Hanley[4], just before 7am on Saturday, December 9. The collision happened near the Ivy House Road junction. An ambulance service spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Leek Road.

Three ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews discovered two cars had been involved in a collision. “The driver of the first car, a man, was found in a critical condition and was receiving basic life support from a bystander. Ambulance crews immediately took over to administer advanced life support before he was conveyed on blue lights to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment.

“The driver of the second car, also a man, was treated for serious injuries and conveyed on blue lights to the same hospital.”

A police spokesman added: “The driver of the Vauxhall is still in hospital but is stable after suffering leg injuries.” Police are appealing for witnesses following the fatal crash. Anyone with any information should call the police on 101, quoting incident number 152 of 9 December.
