Homes evacuated and man taken to hospital after Eston gas explosion as engineers remain at scene
A number of neighbouring homes were evacuated following a gas explosion inside a terrace house in Eston[1]. Emergency services were called shortly before 8.45pm on Monday to a gas explosion in Church Lane, near the junction with Albert Road, in Eston. Cleveland Police[2] has confirmed one man was taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries to his arm. An upstairs window has been completely shattered during the explosion and there is clear damage to the the roof of the home.
The explosion was contained within the one home but neighbouring properties were evacuated while a structural survey was carried out. Neighbours could be seen offering warm cups of tea to residents who had been evacuated in their dressing gowns in the Eston street. One resident told Teesside Live on Monday night: “I just heard a bang and thought it was a crash, I looked out the window and didn’t see anything.
Then they started banging on my door saying I need to leave. I’ve no idea when I’ll be able to get back in.” On Tuesday morning, the cordon has been reduced significantly and remains only partially in place on Albert Road and to the back lane of the properties.
Engineers from Northern Gas Network were at the scene on Monday night and remain carrying out works on the property on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “Police and our Fire Brigade colleagues are currently in the Albert Road/Church Lane area of Eston after a gas explosion inside a house. One person has been taken to hospital by ambulance for what are not currently believed to be life threatening injuries to his arm. “The explosion, which happened around 8.40pm this evening, was contained within the address however as a precaution and until a structural survey can take place around half a dozen properties nearby have been evacuated, with all occupants safely accounted for.

“Emergency services remain on scene and we would like to thank anyone affected for their co-operation and patience.”
There have been no further updates on the man’s condition at this time on Tuesday morning. Teesside Live has contacted the Northern Gas Network for further details.
