K-9 officer hurt in hit-and-run crash; Police searching for suspect

GROTON, Conn. (TND) — A K-9 police officer was hurt in a hit-and-run crash in Connecticut, according to authorities. Now, police said they are searching for the person who is responsible. The Groton Police Department[1] said K-9 Bane suffered serious injuries, including a broken femur, dislocated hip, broken ribs and punctured lungs.

K9 Bane is in stable but serious condition at Tufts Animal Hospital,” the department noted on Facebook. In the social media post, police said a resident reported that a vehicle in front of them hit a black lab on Pleasant Street, which is not far from the department, on Wednesday shortly before 5 p.m. “The citizen, and two other vehicles stopped and rendered aid to the dog, K9 Bane, however, the motorist who struck the dog continued driving,” according to police.

Authorities urged anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash, as well as has security cameras nearby, to contact Detective Andrew Davis at 978-448-5555 or at [email protected]. “We also would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the 4 citizens who stopped and helped our K9,” police noted. It’s not the only sad news for K-9 officers and their comrades in Connecticut.

On Thursday, a Connecticut State Police K-9 was killed[2] in an officer-involved shooting. K9 Broko heroically served with unwavering dedication, saving lives by locating missing individuals, apprehending dangerous suspects, and providing a steadfast shield to his handler,” Connecticut State Police said in a statement Friday. “K9 Broko ultimately sacrificed his life doing what he was known best for.” As of Friday morning, police released little information about the shooting, but said one person was also seriously hurt during the incident.

That person’s name and condition were not immediately known. According to police, state officers were serving an active felony arrest warrant shortly after 7:30 p.m. at a home in Pawcatuck, which is a village in Stonington. State troopers attempted to serve the warrants before an apparent altercation.

Parts of the street were completely blocked off. State police said there was no threat to the public. The shooting is under investigation.
