Sophie Winkleman[1] counts King Charles[2] as a “very dear friend.” The wife of Lord Frederick Windsor, the son of Queen Elizabeth[3]‘s cousin Prince Michael of Kent, opened up about her relationships with members of the royal family as she graced the cover of Tatler’s February 2024 issue[4]. The actress, known for her roles in Two and a Half Men and, most recently, Wonka, shared that she’s “really good friends with all of them.”

“That’s a really daft thing to say, but behind the camera, they’re really fun, clever, kind people,” Sophie, 43, added. She shared a bit about her special relationship with King Charles, 75, and revealed his work ethic knows no bounds. The King “is a very dear friend.

I spend a bit of time with him,” Sophie said. “You see how he works all day long, has a quick supper and then disappears until about 4 a.m. to write letters. He cares about so many things, and he comes up with brilliant solutions.”

She added that while she does “love” Prince William and Kate Middleton, “they’re so busy and don’t live in London, so I don’t see them much.” Sophie, Lord Frederick and their two daughters recently attended Princess Kate’s Christmas carol concert[10] at Westminster Abbey, supporting the Princess of Wales in her third year hosting the holiday event. Maud, the couple’s eldest daughter, used to attend the same school[11] as Prince William and Princess Kate’s children before the Wales family moved to Windsor.

For Sophie — or Lady Frederick Windsor, as she’s officially called — her close-knit bonds with her in-laws became extra important after a terrifying car crash in November 2017 left her trapped in an upside-down vehicle with life-threatening injuries. Story continues The then-Prince Charles’ cook at Clarence House provided her family with two meals a day for months, which Sophie says was “lifesaving, having this massive thing twice daily that I didn’t have to worry about.”

Meanwhile, Prince William asked his air ambulance colleague to “take good care of her” and Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, visited her at the hospital. Can’t get enough of PEOPLE’s Royals coverage? Sophie told Tatler that while speaking to the late Queen at an event, “She asked how I was, and she said, ‘We can’t have that. You have to go in the water.’ She told us that when horses had broken backs, they swam, and so she let me use her pool at Buckingham Palace. That’s the reason I got better.

It was so typically thoughtful.”
