Leeds to be battered by 55mph winds as Met Office issues weekend weather warning

A weather warning for wind has been put in place as the Met Office warns of speeds of up to 55mph. The yellow weather warning covers all of Leeds, including outlying parts of the city and many neighbouring areas. The warning covers Leeds itself, and extends out to Bradford, Wakefield and Huddersfield, as well as some areas in North Yorkshire like Skipton and Selby and all of South Yorkshire.

According to the Met Office, there will be wind speeds of between 45 and 55 mph “widely” while some areas on the Irish Sea may see speeds of between 60 and 70mph. The warning will be in place on Saturday, December 9, from 9am to 11.45pm on the same day. As part of the warning, the Met Office has said to expect delays to all forms of travel, as well as the possibility of short term power cuts.

They have also warned of large waves and spray in coastal communities and delays for high-sided vehicles in exposed areas.

The Met Office said: “Winds will increase in the west during Saturday morning then across other areas through the afternoon. “Gusts of 45 to 55 mph are likely quite widely, with 60-70 mph possible along Irish Sea coasts. Winds then easing slowly from the west through the evening.”
