Live M5, M4 and M49 traffic as crash and storm Gerrit cause havoc

Drivers are being warned of severe delays on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge[1] after a crash this afternoon. The busy motorway is congested westbound as far back as J21, with further congestion on the M49. The closure of the M48 Severn Bridge due to high winds has added to traffic problems.

Traffic on the M4 eastbound is also heavily congested to J24, according to traffic monitor Inrix. The road was blocked for around 40 minutes and the eastbound side has since fully reopened. Inrix reports: “Severe delays and two lanes closed due to accident on M4 Prince of Wales Bridge Westbound between J22 M49 and J23 M48.

Congestion to just before J21 (M48 interchange) and for a few miles on the M49 approaching the M4 interchange for westbound traffic. “Traffic is also severely congested back to J24 (Coldra) for eastbound traffic. Cameras show that lane one (of three) has now reopened after the road was blocked for around 40 minutes.

The eastbound side is now fully open but severe delays remain and isn’t helped by the M48 Severn Bridge closure.” The M5 and M49 also have delays this afternoon as Storm Gerrit hits the region. This is a live blog.
