Live updates as crash closes M4 at Second Severn Crossing

There were severe delays at the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge after traffic was held due to “multiple incidents”. There was already increased traffic in the area due to the earlier closure of the M48 Severn Bridge due to high winds, with the diversion taking drivers to the M4 bridge. It means both Severn bridges are currently closed or blocked.

All traffic was held on the M4 bridge for around 40 minutes. While eastbound has now opened fully and two lanes open westbound, there is still severe congestion around the bridge. Gwent Police confirmed that four vehicles were involved in the eastbound collision.

A witness said that a BMW had crashed into the central reservation and “hit several vehicles in the process”. They said: “Traffic is horrendous.” According to traffic monitoring system Inrix the incident happened just before 12:30pm.

Their warning read: “All traffic being temporarily held and severe delays due to accident on M4 Prince of Wales Bridge Westbound between J22 M49 and J23 M48. Delays aren’t helped due to the closure of the M48 Severn Bridge as traffic diverts along the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge.” Eyewitnesses stuck in the congestion said almost a dozen emergency vehicles had rushed to the bridge and police are on the scene.

The emergency services have been contacted for an update on this incident.
