M4 crash: Diversion routes put in place following ‘serious’ incident

National Highways has put diversion routes in place following a serious crash on the M4 this morning[1] (December 4). Emergency services were called to the scene of a crash between the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge (J22) and Awkley (J21), which involved a lorry and a car, at around 4.44am this morning. As a result of the “nature of the crash”, this stretch of the M4 is expected to remain closed for the rest of the morning.

Consequently, diversion routes have been put in place[2], with motorists advised to allow extra time for their journeys. It has also been advised that motorists should re-route or delay their journeys, if they are not time-sensitive. Different diversion routes have been put in place which motorists have been advised to follow, depending on what direction they plan on travelling in.

Motorists travelling eastbound (towards England) are asked to follow the below diversion:

  • Exit the M4 at J22 and take the 2nd exit onto the M49 southbound.

  • Follow the M49 southbound to the M5 J18 and at the roundabout take the 4th exit to rejoin the M5 northbound at J18A.

  • Continue on the M5 northbound to J16 to rejoin the M4 eastbound and continue your journey.

Those travelling westbound (towards Wales) are asked to follow the below diversion:

  • Exit the M4 at J21 and bear left on to the M48

  • Continue through J1

  • Follow the M48 westbound across the Severn Bridge

  • Continue through J2

  • Continue forward on to the M4 at J23

An update from National Highways reads: “A serious collision occurred at approximately 04:44 resulting in a closure of the M4 in both directions after the Prince of Wales Bridge near Almondsbury. “Avon and Somerset are leading the response to the incident. National Highways resources are in attendance assisting with traffic management.

Due to the nature of the incident the road is expected to remain closed through the morning.”
