M4 diversion route in Wiltshire after serious crash

A diversion route is in place following a serious crash on the M4 this evening (December 9). National Highways said the motorway is expected to remain closed heading eastbound in Wiltshire[1] throughout tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow (December 10). The crash took place between junction 16 for Royal Wootton Bassett and junction 15 for Swindon[2] at around 7pm.

Motorists have been urged to leave extra time for their journeys while the closure remains in place. Wiltshire Police[3] officers and National Highways Traffic Officers are at the scene this evening. Drivers heading eastbound are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs.

The diversion takes motorists off the M4 at junction 16 before taking the first exit at the roundabout onto the A3102. From here, they should take the second exit at the Mannington roundabout and onto the B4006. Then motorists should take the second exit at the Bruce Street Bridges roundabout onto the B4289 before reaching the Transfer Bridges roundabout and taking the third exit.

The diversion then takes vehicles onto the A4313 before turning left onto the A4312.

Finally, drivers should take the first exit at the next roundabout onto the A4259 before heading onto the A419 and re-joining the M4 at junction 15.
